Why Prototype First

One sample run is cheaper than one wrong mold

Steel tooling is a multi-thousand-dollar commitment. Before we cut a single cavity, our engineering team can produce a functional or cosmetic prototype in your chosen material family — so you confirm dimensions, wall thickness, snap-fits and surface finish while changes still cost almost nothing.

Every prototype order includes a written DFM report flagging draft angle, wall thickness and undercut issues that would otherwise surface — expensively — after the mold is already cut. This is the same review our tooling engineers use before quoting mass production.

Samples are shipped with a short dimensional inspection summary, and where relevant, the same resin grade and colorant used in production, so mechanical and cosmetic properties translate directly to your final part.

5 Prototyping & Sample-Making Routes

Each method trades off cost, lead time and how closely the part behaves like final production plastic. We recommend the right one after reviewing your file — free of charge.

CNC Machined Prototype
Functional Grade
CNC Machined Prototype

Milled directly from solid engineering-grade resin (ABS, PC, POM, Nylon) or aluminum. Closest match to real material properties — ideal for fit and function testing.

SLA-3D-Printing
Visual / Fit Check
SLA 3D Printing

High-resolution resin printing for smooth cosmetic surfaces, fine detail and quick fit checks. Best for presentation models and early-stage design reviews.

SLS Nylon Printing
Functional Grade
SLS Nylon Printing

Durable nylon (PA) parts with no support marks, good for snap-fits, hinges and thin-wall enclosures that need to survive real handling and assembly testing.

Silicone Vacuum Casting
Small Batch
Silicone Vacuum Casting

A master pattern casts 10-30 near-production parts in polyurethane resins that mimic ABS, PP or rubber-like TPE — economical for pilot runs and market testing.

Rapid Aluminum Tooling
Pre-Production
Rapid Aluminum Tooling

A soft aluminum mold, injection molded in your actual production resin — the final checkpoint before cutting hardened steel tooling for full-scale production.

Common Questions

Prototype & Sample FAQ

Do you charge for prototypes or samples?

CNC and 3D-printed prototypes are charged at cost (typically $15-80 per part depending on size and complexity), since they use real machine time and material. For simple existing catalog products, a free sample may be available — ask when you inquire.

Will the prototype material match my final production part?

CNC-machined prototypes use the actual target resin, so mechanical properties match closely. 3D-printed prototypes use an analog material — close in look and feel, but we'll flag any property that differs before you approve it for testing.

What file formats do you accept?

STEP, IGES and STL for 3D models; PDF or DWG for 2D drawings with GD&T. No file yet? We can also work from a physical reference sample or detailed sketch.

Can prototypes be painted, textured or color-matched?

Yes — bead blasting, painting, silk-screening, pad printing and Pantone color matching are all available on prototype parts, at an additional cost quoted with your sample order.

How does a prototype lead into mass production?

Once your sample is approved, the same engineering file and DFM notes carry directly into mold design — see our Mold Design & Manufacturing page for the next step.

Is there a minimum order for the sample stage?

No — we accept single-piece prototype orders. Silicone casting and rapid tooling naturally involve slightly larger batches (10+ pcs) due to the tooling setup involved.
